How notice is counted

Notice usually starts the day after your employer receives your resignation. A notice period in weeks or months ends on the same weekday or date that many weeks or months later. Some contracts and laws add a rule that notice can only end on the 15th or the last day of a month — pick that under “Notice ends on” and the date moves to the next allowed day.

Using up your vacation

In many places you can take your remaining vacation days during your notice period, so your last day at work comes earlier than your last day of employment. The calculator counts those days back from the end, skipping weekends.

Before you resign

  • Check your contract for the notice period and any end-of-month rule.
  • Ask whether your employer can shorten or pay in lieu of notice.
  • Have your letter ready — the resignation letter tool writes one in a minute.
